Assignment #5: Reflections and Shadows
Reflections
A Flash in the Pan
It's Art
Hair in My Face
Artist Statement: My favorite of my reflection photos I took is "It's Art," because Natalie told me, "That's not art, that's a selfie." I asked her why a picture can't be both. There is something brilliant in self-portraits, where you can capture the exterior and the interior feelings of the artist. In my picture, you can see how I'm trying to use the flash to hide my face, despite having a nice dress and makeup on. It is meant to represent how we never want to see the full extent of our reflections, because we always find something to criticize or "cover up" no matter how we might look. We always focus on flaws rather than what is good in ourselves.
Shadows
Elbows Up
Bent Elbow
The Sun Sets
Artist Statement: I took my reflection photos as the sun was setting outside my bedroom. The last one, "The Sun Sets," is inspired by a photo I saw somewhere online where you can only see a girl's silhouette in her shadow. I like the mystery of shadows; you never know what the light might be shining on. Am I crying, or am I laughing? Is there someone else there, or am I all alone? It leaves the reader to wonder and draw their own story based on what they see, and what they don't.
Fake Shadow and Reflection
My Shadow Man
Artist Statement: I tried to make this image look like there was a shadow of someone walking down the trail behind the camera. I found a silhouette of a man online and played with it until it looked like a realistic shadow. Then I followed the tutorial instructions to make it transparent and diffused. I like how mine is subtle and very close to looking realistic. I almost did a woman's silhouette, but the hair looked too weird so I am glad I chose a man's.
My Shadow Man (Part II)
Artist Statement: Oh man, where do I start with this photo! I took this on our eighth grade class trip to Chicago in eighth grade. This is at Six Flags. There are many boardwalks in Chicago, like the Navy Pier, and Six Flags reminded me of them. That's why I decided to reflect it. I Use the brush tool to make the ferris wheel in the water look crinkly and wavy; that's how I felt when I rode it and as I drove away.
