Assignment #3: Architecture
The Armory
Unite
Artist Statement: This is an interesting brick building. I thought the lettering above the doors ("The Armory") had a nice contrast against the brick. I had to wait for people to empty out in order to get a good shot. It was getting really cold, but I waited it out with Natalie and I think my shot turned out okay. I like how grand the building looks and tried to capture that feeling in the photos.
The West Branch
Noticed
Not Tenuous
Artist Statement: I liked all the windows on this building. It was a challenge to try to angle myself so the pictures would not capture anyone in the windows, since it seemed to be very busy with students. The sky in the photo looks very cold. The feeling I was trying to capture was that same coldness that I felt standing outside of the big brick walls. I like that these bricks are grey and not necessarily red.
Jumbled
Tremble
The Windows
Artist Statement: I loved the detail on the windows of this feeling. It felt very warm and inviting even on a brisk, rainy day. I wanted to highlight the beautiful architecture of the window frames through my photography, so I had to choose my angles carefully. The bricks make a nice contrast against one another in this picture. I like the way the sunlight highlights the glass panes, even though it was a cloudy day.
Trick
Separate
Angular
Artist Statement: This building looked very imposing from the outside, almost like it was a castle. I wanted to capture that in the photos I took. Not a lot of people were there, so I had a lot of space to move around. There was some very nice detailing on the side of the building I wanted to highlight. The sky makes a nice contrast with the red bricks.
Damaged
Crouch
Simplistic
Artist Statement: This is a building downtown I found architecturally interesting due to the overhang on top. I had some trouble trying to capture both that overhang and not get any people in. My solution was to crouch on the ground and point my camera up, thus the name. I wanted to capture how tiny I felt looking up at that big overhang in my photos. I tried to keep it highlighted against the sky to make the building look as massive and looming as it felt.
